NASA Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for NASA grants?
NASA grants are open to universities, nonprofit research institutions, state and local governments, and small businesses (via SBIR/STTR). Most NASA research grants require affiliation with a U.S. institution. International researchers may participate as collaborators but typically cannot be principal investigators on NASA grants.
How does NASA SBIR work?
NASA's SBIR program funds small businesses (under 500 employees) developing technologies with NASA applications. Phase I awards provide up to $150,000 over 6 months for feasibility studies. Phase II awards provide up to $750,000 over 24 months for prototype development. Phase III involves commercialization without additional SBIR funds. NASA is one of the most competitive SBIR agencies, funding roughly 20% of Phase I applicants.
What is the NASA EPSCoR program?
EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) supports NASA-relevant research at institutions in states that have historically received less than 0.75% of NASA research funding. The program funds research infrastructure, graduate fellowships, and cooperative activities between EPSCoR states and NASA centers. Awards range from $750,000 to $1 million over 3 years.
