DOI-NPS Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for NPS grants?
NPS grants go to state and local governments, tribes, nonprofits, and educational institutions depending on the program. LWCF Stateside grants flow through State Outdoor Recreation Liaison Officers. Historic Preservation Fund grants are awarded to State and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, which may sub-grant to local governments and nonprofits.
What is the Land and Water Conservation Fund and how large are grants?
The LWCF Stateside program distributes formula funds to all 50 states for acquiring and developing public recreation areas. Individual project grants typically range from $50,000 to several million dollars and require a 50% match. Projects must remain in public recreational use in perpetuity. Applications go through each state's outdoor recreation agency.
How do I apply for Historic Preservation Fund grants?
HPF grants flow through State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs). Local governments, nonprofits, and individuals typically apply to their state SHPO, which manages the sub-grant process. Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) may also receive direct HPF grants. Eligible activities include survey and inventory, National Register nominations, preservation planning, and bricks-and-mortar rehabilitation of listed properties.
